Smart Step membership balloons

The Smart Step Youth Association, now in its third year, has quadrupled in membership since last summer and will be out in force at tomorrow’s Canada Day celebration in Rotary Park.

According to a Smart Step founder and executive director Nick Kang, 76 youths in Grades 7-12 have joined the group for the summer.

The group started out with 12 members in 2009. The next year, 18 youths joined.

Kang says the young volunteers will make their first big splash of the summer by helping out with activities at the Canada Day celebration.

“Hopefully we’ll have about 50 kids there, all wearing Smart Step T-shirts, and we’ll make a big impact.”
