More participants signed up for the 2011 Merritt Relay for Life than last year and raised far more in donations as well.
According to Diane Van Hoof, the Merritt Relay for Life leadership chair, just over $18,000 was collected from this year’s event, held at Rotary Park overnight from June 11-12. As with similar events across the country, proceeds will benefit the Canadian Cancer Society.
“We just about doubled what we made last year.”
In total, there were 55 official, registered participants at the relay as well as a handful of latecomers on the relay’s victory lap, says Van Hoof. There were 44 participants at the 2010 Merritt Relay for Life.
About three dozen businesses sponsored the relay and donated items for a loonie auction, Van Hoof adds.
While the bulk of the money raised came from donations that relay runners collected, several hundred dollars were raised by the loonie auction and a cakewalk, a musical chairs-style bake sale, says Van Hoof.
The sale of luminaries, decorative lights that lined the nighttime relay route, throughout the year also raised about $500.
Van Hoof says a date has not yet been set for next year’s Relay for Life.
