Child killer Allan Schoenborn withdrew his request for escorted day leave before the B.C. Review Board reversed its decision to authorize supervised visits outside the Forensic Psychiatric Hospital Thursday.
At the hearing, held at the Forensic Psychiatric Hospital in Coquitlam, Schoenborn’s lawyer read a statement that said he wished “no further hardship” for his former wife, Darcie Clarke. Schoenborn has been kept at the hospital since February 2010, when he was found to be not criminally responsible for killing his three children in Merritt in April 2008 due to a mental disorder.
At an April 5 hearing, the B.C. Review Board decided to allow the hospital’s clinical
director, Dr. Johann Brink, to grant escorted day leave to Schoenborn depending on his mental condition.
However, the decision prompted a public outcry. After it became known that Clarke now lives in Coquitlam, the board decided to meet again and re-examine its decision.
Schoenborn’s statement at Thursday’s hearing asked for a “strict custody order”, which would allow no leave. He noted that he learned of his wife’s whereabouts through media coverage and wanted to protect her from greater stress.
“Her stability is paramount."
The board granted Schoenborn’s request, ordering that he stay in custody without any day passes.
As in all cases where a person has been found not criminally responsible due to mental disorder, Schoenborn is entitled to another review before the board next April. He can apply for leave again at that time.
