Campfire allowed in time for long weekend

A ban on small campfires has been lifted just in time for the Labour Day long weekend.

Fire information officer Michaela Swan said several days of cool, wet weather and a long-range forecast predicting more of the same meant the ban could be lifted Monday.

“The weather remains unsettled through the 10-day forecast,” she said.

Although small, contained campfires are allowed, open fires, including fireworks and burning barrels, are not. Swan said people caught with anything larger than a 0.5-metre wide by 0.5-metre tall blaze can be fined $348.

Even with the cooler weather, there is still a chance a forest fire could start. Swan asked people to never leave a campfire unattended and ensure the ashes are cold to the touch before leaving the area.

“If you aren’t willing to put your hand in (the ashes) then the fire is not out,” she said.
