Dear Editor:
Recently, I have felt the loss of several friends. These ladies were not just my friends, but friends of the entire community. Doris Downey, Elva Reid, and Lois Reid were committed volunteers with the Canadian Cancer Society.
Doris and Elva, both long-time breast cancer survivors, were an inspiration to many people newly diagnosed with cancer. Their positive attitude and determination to survive was contagious! Doris and Elva were always there —
knocking on doors in April, selling daffodils, helping with the golf tournament, laughing and/or crying with folks at the support group, and helping to communicate the message of the cancer society.
Lois Reid, who passed away last September, was a dedicated volunteer. Lois, likewise, participated in all activities and was the driving force behind the golf tournament.
Over the years, significant funds were realized to provide furnishings and comfort items for the folks using the lodge at the then new cancer clinic in Kelowna.
These ladies dedicated much of their time, energy, and resources not only to helping improve the quality of life of those coping with cancer, but many other worthy causes in our community. Thank you, Doris, Elva, and Lois for your commitment to helping others, and for your friendship and support. You are missed.
