QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Powers and Allgrove take night races

Merritt Stock Car Association members raced at the beginning of August and will meet again before the month is over. The association hosted races on the evenings of July 31 and Aug. 1 at the Merritt Speedway.

“I think we had 24 or 25 cars in all of the classes,” said Lonni Boszko, the association member responsible for the association's public relations.

Four car classes competed on Aug. 1: hobby, street, four-cylinder bomber, and six-or-eight-cylinder bomber. A fifth car class, dwarf cars, raced on July 31.

“They look like Legends,” said Boszko, with body styles that mimic cars from the 1930s and 1940s, but built to five-eighths scale. A motorcycle engine powers each dwarf car.

“Car and driver weigh between 1,200-1,400 pounds,” said Boszko.

She said the turnout at the races was comparable to others during the racing season, which starts in May and ends in October.

“We have roughly 30 cars, give or take, on a regular basis.”

Boszko estimated that 80-100 people work on the member cars, including family and youth projects.

“It's just fun racing by a bunch of people that love to race.”

When the association next meets on Aug. 28, however, racers and attendees are invited to support the local food bank.

“If they would like to bring some items, they would be more than welcome,” said Boszko.

The Crime Stoppers raffle truck will also be on display at the Merritt Speedway and tickets will be available for sale.

At the second-to-last meet of the season, on the weekend of Sept. 11, the association will be collecting toys for children in need this Christmas.

The association will close the season with daytime races on Thanksgiving weekend. The Aug. 28 and Sept. 11 meets take place in the evening.
