Cents Hills and Valenti gone

When the Merritt Centennials return to the ice later this month, outgoing player Derek Hills will be headed south of the border to join the Amarillo Bulls in Amarillo, Texas.

Hills has signed on to play for the Bulls, a team in the North American Hockey League.

During his time with the Cents, Hills played both defence and on the wing. Last season, he scored 18 goals and added 30 assists.

Hills was born in 1990 and grew up in Campbell River.

Former Cents forward Alex Valenti is seeking hockey fame and fortune in the U.S. as well. Valenti will play for the College of St. Scholastica, starting in the 2010-11 season. Valenti is following in the footsteps of Ryne Bodger, a fellow Centennial whose spot on the St. Scholastica lineup was announced earlier this summer.

The College of St. Scholastica is an NCAA Division III college in Duluth, Minn. Not surprisingly, its athletes are known as the Saints.

Valenti set career highs in goals and points with the Centennials last season, scoring 17 times and adding 23 assists.

“We are very happy that Alex has ensured that his hockey career will continue beyond his time here in Merritt,” read a statement from the Centennials that quoted head coach and general manager Luke Pierce.

He continued, “I believe that Alex is an elite player who could be considered a major steal” for the college.
