Firefighters were able to extinguish a wildfire in Lower Nicola Thursday before any surrounding structures were damaged.

The Kamloops Fire Centre quickly responded to a wildfire that was reported shortly after 2:00 p.m. The fire covered an estimated two hectares of land located at the intersection of Highway 97c (Mamit Lake road) and Highway 8.

“It's one hundred per cent contained, and ninety per cent mopped up,” said Kayla Pepper, Fire Information Officer with the Kamloops Fire Centre on Friday. “There is a small amount of smoke, but crews are heading out there today to keep an eye on it.”

Two pieces of heavy equipment, 16 firefighters, and three air-tankers responded to the spreading blaze.

“Crews got it under control pretty quickly yesterday,” continued Pepper. “They hit it pretty hard.”

The Fire Danger Rating is currently moderate to high across most of the area covered by the Kamloops Fire Centre. Wildfire risk continues to grow as hot and dry conditions cause forest to dry out and becoming fire fuel.

The Fire Centre reminds the public that burning restrictions are in place across the region. For up to date information on fire activity, bans, and current conditions, visit the Wildfire Management Branch website at www.bcwildfire.ca.
