Caring for younglings brings appreciation for child rearing

With Morva coming home not long after her hernia operation, it was necessary for her to stay abed for awhile. The remainder of my holiday time was taken and newborn baby care was thrust upon me. Olive was on the job right away, and with occasional visits from my Mom, they helped and gave advice, which was really needed. Diaper changing was quickly mastered, but not enjoyed; baby milk formula preparation for this hungry little guy came easily. At the end of each day, I was sore-footed and completely pooped. This experience left me with a deep appreciation for the amount of work involved in child rearing.

It made a much better parent out of me—more aware in the end. The fact that our family was growing made it necessary to think about more room. We added a two-bedroom extension on our home and finished them completely by using the windows to go in and out. It was a big day when the doorway was cut through and we could move into them immediately. Aunt Winnie helped some in the construction phase. She was living next door and kept a friendly eye on us. She had no children of her own and seemed to enjoy visiting our new son. Aunt Winnie enjoyed all the young children in our neighbourhood; she would entertain them with lawn parties and arrange all kinds of different races that would have her and the children in gales of laughter. Birthdays and any occasion at all would be excuse enough for her to gather the children and have a good time.
