Merritt Library’s free Summer Reading Club opens July 2 for children interested in some summer reading fun.
“This is a free program offered to children aged 3-12 in the Merritt area,” said Tonya Chypyha Summer Reading Club coordinator. “It’s also offered to any visiting children who are coming to the Nicola Valley for vacation during the summer.
They are more than welcome to come.”
Participants can expect reading, games, crafts, songs, stories, acting, dancing, and even some riddles and jokes when they come out.
“It’s a fun and interactive program to get kids excited about reading and to get them doing their own voluntary reading,” said Chypyha. “Research has shown that kids who are surrounded by books tend to want to read more and they take more of an interest.”
The opening party for the program will be held Friday July 2 at the Merritt Library. Registration for the program starts on this day and children are welcome to come join throughout the day. Ages 3-5 from 10-11a.m., ages 6-9 from 11:30a.m.- 12:30p.m., ages 10-12 from 1-2p.m.
“We realize that a lot of the kids need to go away during the summer and they won’t be able to make it every time, but that’s okay,” continued Chypyha. “Even if they can only come once during the whole summer we would welcome that, they’ll have a great time and it would be beneficial for them to come.”
The B.C. Library association, as well as government grants and local sponsorship, supports the program. Children who participate will receive a free pepperoni pizza from Domino's pizza.
If that’s not incentive enough to read, participants will receive a free pizza from Boston Pizza for every milestone they reach as well as other awards for their hard work.
“Every year the summer reading club tries to promote B.C. talent and the illustrator this year is from Victoria. His name is Chris Tougas, and he’s coming to the Merritt library for a very special visit on Saturday July 10 from 11-12,” said Chypyha. “All ages are welcome, including kids in the reading club and even adults and smaller kids.Everyone is welcome to that event.”
There are a number of classes offered, but participants only have to pick one to attend on a weekly basis. More information and registration forms can be found at the Merritt Library.
