Members of the Merritt Otters swim team took part in their first official competition of the summer season in Lumby.
The swimming experience of the team ranges as much as their ages do, participants are 6-17, but one thing they do have in common is their love of swimming.
“Most swimmers at each meet will race the four swimming strokes; Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke, and Freestyle at distances of 50m, 100m, and 200m, said head coach Iris Cheng. “Once school is out, the team trains as much as twice a day Monday to Friday, including dryland practices 3 times a week.”
The Lumby meet brought the team six first place finishes. The team achieved these in: 50m Backstroke and 100m Freestyle by Kenzie Rubner, 200m IM and 100m Fly by Alexandra Rubner, 100m Backstroke by Taylor Carmichael, and 100m Breaststroke by Erin Thomsen.
A third place finish was also secured by the division two 4x50 relay.
Each weekend the team travels to a competition hosted by clubs around the Okanagan. July 3-4 they will be competing in Kelowna.
