Despite increasing fuel costs and the growing complexity of engines, the North American fascination with the automobile has no indication of dying down.
Automobile enthusiasts and Vintage Car Club of Canada members from Merritt, Ashcroft, and Spences Bridge gathered at the Canadian Tire parking lot Saturday to show off their shined up and souped up vintage rides.
“There was a 1968 Camaro SS, and then we had a 1955 Ford pickup that was a hot rod,” said Ted Lund, treasurer of the Merritt Chapter of the Car Club.
“The oldest was a Model T (1927 Ford), and the next ones that were up were from the 50s.”
The event, the first show and shine for the Club, received 25 entries, and some of the entrants managed to win some prizes.
“For the last two years the school (MSS) has picked a student that's in the automotive or body shop area and, in conjunction with Canadian Tire, they donate a real nice toolbox and tools, and we give a $250 gift certificate,” explained Lund.
Today, the members of the Car Club will take their vehicles to Merritt Secondary School to show them off to car enthusiast students.
Next on the agenda for the Car Club is the Cross Canada Tour, which starts on July 6. Four families from the Merritt Chapter have joined up with over 100 vehicle owners in Newfoundland. They will cruise across the nation, making stops in several cities and towns, including in Merritt.
The public is invited to come to Merritt Central Park on August 18 to see over 100 vintage cars.
