Local Native bands discuss gateway project

A casino, hotel and cultural centre are all in the plans for a proposed collaboration between local native bands.

The Lower Nicola Indian Band hosted a meeting at the Shulus Band Hall on Friday morning to discuss development plans for a project dubbed Gateway 286.

Four local bands discussed the possibilities of working together on a development that would see the current BC Visitor’s Centre turned into a cultural interpretive centre.

Chief Don Moses says he would like to see a new visitor centre created with a cultural centre attached to it as well as a hotel and casino.

“There was definite consensus at the meeting and we made progress,” says Moses.

This would be the biggest project involving local bands since the Grasslands Hotel burnt down on July 22, 2007.
