Pellet plant opening

Merritt will be home to a new manufacturing plant taking advantage of opportunities in the renewable
energy sector.

The bio-energy wood pellet plant is a $5 million investment for Merritt, which could employ up to 50 people in the region as early as June.

Rob and Jenny McDonald have spent the last three years seeking investors for the project, and have attracted Ontario-based Woodville Pellet as a partner.

Investment money from Woodville Pellet will be matched by the Business Development Bank and a federal grant through the Community Adjustment Fund, according to Community Futures general manager Patrick Lindsay.

Highland Pellet Manufacturing will utilize the waste product from its block sorting business, putting to use a product that would otherwise become garbage.
