Sayso Expression Society members (left-right) Jody Okabe, Matt Gustafson, Tammy Caruso, and Mil Juricic will provide open mic nights for aspiring artists like guitarist Sue Sterling (lower right).

Budding musicians, artists, poets and the like will get a chance to show their abilities at a new ongoing open microphone night starting next week.

Self-expression group Sayso Expression Society, a first of its kind in Merritt, will hold a series of open microphone nights every month starting Nov. 13. at Iron Mountain Music.

“We want for people to come out and express themselves,” said Sayso founding member Tammy Caruso.
Both youth and adults in town with an artistic ability or just an opinion will be given an opportunity express themselves through Sayso's open microphone nights or through the other forums it has planned.

Participants who purchase a membership for $10 will can showcase their talent through a musical performance, poetry readings, spoken word, art presentations, and for those who just have strong opinions related to the community or politics, they will get a chance to voice their concerns through a political forum.

Caruso says everyone, no matter what level of ability, is welcome to participate.

“Merritt has nothing like this,” said Caruso.

“I really want the community to see something like this grow.”

Caruso came up with the idea for the society after her experience performing at open microphone venues in Calgary.

When Caruso moved to Merritt she got together with other artists in the community and began discussions which resulted in the founding of Sayso, derived from the common response “because I said so.”

Caruso was impressed with a recent performance by musical performers held at Starbucks in Merritt.
“I didn't know that (talent) was here,” said Caruso.

“There's so much diversity in what people in the community can play.”

Sayso has 30 members so far, about 15 of which will perform during open microphone nights.
The society also plans to sponsor concerts featuring up-and-coming musicians from around B.C.

Those interested in performing or for more information can contact Sayso by email saysoexpression@gmail.com or by phone at 250-315-9349.
Open microphone nights will start Nov. 13 at Iron Mountain Music. Doors open at 7 p.m. The second open microphone night takes place Dec. 11.
