New show features three local artists

Courthouse Art Gallery
Steve Thornton

At home in her studio, Miriam Loken holds a painting that she’s currently working on. The painting of a horse is something new, a branching out. Loken’s work will be seen with art by Bev Veale and Shirley Sauviat at the Courthouse Art Gallery in a show that opens Nov. 6.

A show featuring the work of local artists Bev Veale, Miriam Loken, and Shirley Sauviat will run at the Courthouse Gallery in Merritt Nov. 6 – 28.

Bev Veale is a longtime resident of Merritt and the Nicola Valley and one of the featured artists in the book, “Visual Artists of the Nicola Valley.” She is a former chair of the Nicola Valley Community Arts Council and the Valley Visual Artists. Veale is a wood carver but is also known for her painting and drawing. She works in watercolour and oils to create paintings of flowers and landscapes, and portraits of people and their pets.

Miriam Loken is new to Merritt, and to painting, but has gained a following for her watercolour portraits of dogs and other animals. She is a sculptor and creates leafy-water sculptures with rhubarb leaves, driftwood, and concrete. She is a member of the Valley Visual Artists.

Shirley Sauviat has lived in the Nicola Valley for 20 years and works in pastels, various paint types, and wood carving. She is a member of the Valley Visual Artists.

A reception will be held on Nov. 6, from 5 to 9 p.m., at the gallery in the old courthouse on Nicola Avenue.
